Fall time in Plitvice Lakes National Park, part 2

Visiting the lower falls and lake in Plitvice Lakes National Park is just as striking as visiting the upper falls area which I covered in an earlier post. If you didn’t get a chance to view the upper falls tour, please check out my latest post here. Registered as a Unesco World Heritage site in 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park covers close to 73,000 acres of land. It is the most popular national park in Croatia with over 1,200,000 visitors coming to enjoy the stunning landscape and waterfalls.

Autumn time at Plitvice is one of the best seasons to see all the lovely fall colors contrasting with the green moss, waterfalls and grassy planes.  It is so easy to take a photograph at any angle and come up with some amazing captures. But do take your time to enjoy the slower pace while you walk through the elevated walkways and trails – this is really nature at it’s best in Croatia!

At the base of the upper falls in the main Plitvice Lake which separates the upper and lower lakes areas. The ferry service connects the two areas and is a wonderful way to see the landscape from a slow ferry service, take a look it’s really stunning don’t you think?

When you reach the end of the ferry ride to the lower falls area, there are many trails leading to different vista points and more falls to visit. Close by is a trail that goes up hill for about 1/2 mile to a panoramic vista point of the lower lakes and surrounding park areas, don’t miss it because it’s worth the climb to see this spectacular view!

The largest grouping of waterfalls are in the lower lakes and are called Veliki slap, a series of overlapping falls and smaller falls cascading into aqua green pools below.  With all the autumn colors surrounding the striking outcroppings, it is truly stunning to witness, don’t you agree? Even on the rainy morning that I was there, the colors were saturated and magnificent to witness – really it is an amazing place to witness in any season or condition.
