I’m so loving it here: a stay at the Royal Olympic Hotel, Athens

I head directly to the top viewing floor to get a view of the expansive grounds below fronting the Temple of Zeus in the historic district of Athens, Greece. The views are stunning with a commanding panorama of the temple grounds, off to the left side are views of the Acropolis with the Parthenon jutting out magnificently from the plateau. It is impressive to see both major landmarks from the rooftop terrace of the Royal Olympic. The entire terrace is both indoors and outdoors with a joint breakfast buffet area, a fine dining restaurant and an adjacent bar all sharing these outstanding views of the ruins below and above. I could easily spend the entire afternoon relaxing with a nice drink with those amazing views to enjoy, without the crowds of tourists below.  I had just checked into the hotel and left my suitcases downstairs at the desk check since I had arrive early for a conference and the room was not quite ready.  Coming up to the roof to catch a view of the temple grounds and get a few bites of breakfast before the start of my conference was definitely a great start of my stay at the Royal Olympic hotel.

Upon returning to the hotel from the conference, I was quite surprised by the views from my bedroom. It was an exact duplicate of the rooftop views, but a few floors below. My room and views fronted directly to the Olympic ruins to the  temple of Zeus, these huge windows covered an entire wall to maximize the larger than life views of the ruins.  I was really impressed and thought maybe I should sleep with the windows open at night-time so I can see this all evening.

The bedroom suite is also grand with and extra-large living room and bedroom suite in classic traditional furnishings trimmed in yellow and blue, very formal but still livable – it definitely matched the views within its elegant surroundings.  Let me add the closet was a large walk-in closet with seat, a bar area and well the bathrooms – totally over the top with wall to wall carerra white marble from the floors to the surrounds and vanity, needless to say all the fixtures are gold/brass interim for added glitz but not too excessive if you can imagine that.  Fortunately I had cut out of my conference a little earlier so I can enjoy the room a bit prior to an evening function and that called for a nice long bath and why not, the tub was huge and I had a long day of focused study so I needed a little TLC.

Breakfast service

Back up at the rooftop buffet for breakfast, I was impressed again with the expansive breakfast buffet, it commanded and entire back side of the room with sections for fruits and cold breakfast items, hot ready items, an omelet station, bread station, desserts. It had everything you could imagine including items for a typical Greek breakfast and all the delicious Greek pastries you would want to indulge in. Every seat in the dining room had amazing views, but the ones right on the edge by the windows were truly remarkable. I could have easily spent the entire morning eating through the line of goodies and soaking in the amazing views, but I had the morning’s conference to attend to.

Bar service

The Royal Olympic has two bars and pool for drinks service. I had reserved a small section in the upstairs bar to host a group of conference friends to enjoy the views and sunset up at the rooftop which was a fantastic way to network with people and enjoy the views from the rooftop. Let me say that having drinks while watching the sunset in front of the temples and then the Parthenon lit up for the night is just outstanding and all my friends enjoyed the views and drink service at the rooftop.

Downstairs lounge, amenities and pool area

I didn’t get to use the hotel pool because of my conference schedule, but I did take a quick peak and took some pictures along with the reception areas. The pool is nice and quiet and a perfect way to end a busy day touring all the attractions around the city. The reception and lounge areas have a variety of seating areas to relax or meet casually with friends. There’s also the premiere restaurant located one the main floor, but I didn’t get a chance to have a meal there due to a tight conference schedule.

Summary

I cannot say how wonderful my stay was and how excellent the accommodations were. My room was very comfortable and so large, I can’t get over how amazing the views were and the elegant room. Even the turn-down service with all the lights turned on at night raised the experience. I’m so impressed with the service and attention to detail and cleanliness. Needless to say, if you want to be located central in the historic district, this is exactly the right place to be. I can’t express how exceptional the stay is at the Royal Olympic and would welcome staying in Athens at this fine hotel. Royal Olympic is a member of Great Hotels of the World Luxury Collection.
