Gorgeous Ljubljana Castle and views
Instead of taking the cable car to the popular Ljubljana castle overlooking the entire city, I decided to walk up one of the main trails to the top which was actually quite pleasant for an autumn day. The fall colors were prevalent everywhere so it was a beautiful hike up to the castle and a good work out at the same time. Along the uphill walk are lots of spots to take a break or areas with wonderful peek-a-boo views to the city below. It’s nice to hike and do a rigorous workout to the top of the castle so you can celebrate by visiting the stylish pastry shop inside the castle grounds and sample any of the delicious desserts like this colorful torte below. (layered blue berry and fruits with lavender, crème and a hazelnut cake.
Green spaces around Ljubjlana
It’s easy to find some green spaces around the capital city of Ljubjlana in Slovenia. Even in the historic district there are lots of green spaces, hiking trails along the river and the castle area with it’s natural parks and wild lands.
The climb is a good workout in itself but not that difficult or long, I think it probably took under 40 minutes with a few breaks for taking in the views and doing some photographs. The Ljubljana castle is an intact medieval fortress that is the iconic symbol of the city and has survived many
History of Slovenia
when you finally get to the top of the hill and enter the castle, you will be rewarded with some amazing panoramas. Entrance to the castle grounds is free, but to visit the interiors and the city museum, you do have to pay an entrance fee. But it is worth the entry price, just for the views alone. The museum has the permanent collection of the Slovenian history, artifacts, dioramas and interactive displays. Along with the entrance, you are given headsets for a free audio tour. If you have time, take the self-guided tour. It will give a comprehensive overview of Ljubljana’s fascinating history of all the various historical timeframes from Roman rule to the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century and the socialist Yugoslavia to their independence.
Stunning views on the top
For those perfect panorama views, you need to climb up to the main viewing tower via these cool circular red stairs below. It very colorful and a fun photo ‘s a real interesting and colorful staircase! At the top, you’ll get 360 degree views of the entire city below and the surrounding hills and country side. When I made it to the top, it seems like autumn was in full force around the entire city and every section of the tower had magnificent views to the various parts of the city with their mostly red tile roofs and brightly painted exteriors.
If you go to the castle
You can easily take the cable car, a bus or hike up to the castle
The cable car starts from the historic district and opens at
Costs per person for return tram and castle entry is 8Eur, the tram which runs every ten minutes
Castle entry, museum and tower is 6 Eur

Nice article and photos! Slovenia’s a beautiful (and wonderfully under-visited country), and Ljubljana is a true delight.
Slovenia is a place that hasn’t really been on my radar but in the last year several of my traveling friends have been and loved it. Great wide angle photos. That Ljubljana pastries looks to pretty to eat!
I agree that hiking up the castle is a great activity, not just offering light recreation but nice views too. The castle is one of my favorite attractions in Ljubljana and that cake looks simply amazing 🙂
Noel, It looks like a wonderful fall trip. I would love to go to Ljubljana. Great photos!
What a gorgeous city – and it looks like a perfect time of year to visit. What fun!
Ha ha, nice happy photo of you at the end. The purple jacket really pops out among the leaves. I think I’d prefer a walk up to the castle instead of the cable car. 40 minutes sounds very doable, especially if it lessens the caloric guilt of indulging in a pastry at the top. The views look so pretty, especially during that time of the year. I no absolutely nothing about Slovenian history, so I’m sure the audioguide would be quite enlightening. Thanks for hosting this link up.
The backdrop of mountains is wonderful, Noel. I’m always one for climbing to the top of any hill or castle but the Autumn foliage and skies make this a really joyful experience. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I would so love to visit a Castle like that. The views are gorgeous 😀
The red roofs from the downward view is so inviting! And I love the detail with the towers:)
HI Noel
Slovenia looks like a beautiful city to visit. I loved the panoramic view you had from the top of the tower. Your photos are wonderful! The pastry looks delicious!
Great photos, as always, Noel. You keep tempting us to return to Slovenia with these photos! I tried to link up but found no blue bar. I’ll check back later.
