Museum night in San Francisco at the Academy of Sciences – Travel Photo Mondays

Museum night in San Francisco, Travel Photo Discovery #45
I’m waiting patiently in line among a throng of people at 6pm in front of a museum in the city – normally closing time for most museums in the world, but not in San Francisco. I read this blip on a site somewhere online about fun things happening in the city and a cool new thing to do was Thursday nights at the Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park – Whaaat? Well I just have to check this out, and surprisingly the place is packed with a huge line at 6 pm with the doors not opening for another 30 minutes. Quite an interesting mix of ages were present – seniors, married couples, young people on dates, groups of college friends – hmmm, I’m fascinated with this broad demographic, it must be a lot of fun.

Apparently it’s good to get here early because the place is packed at night-time which makes me wonder what makes this so interesting for a Thursday night? Ah yes, the price tag is a mere $12 bucks to get in and guess what, there are no screaming kids allowed in tonight’s program – it’s strictly an adult venue.

So many cool exhibits and displays are open to explore tonight including the new special exhibits that are being shown. The nice part of this is that you can participate and ask questions as an adult without a minor to watch over. Unusual sessions like the images below of scientists doing open dissections and discussions of animals being prepared for studies and preservation.

Since this is an adult venue, there is a weekly theme of events that are focused on a specific theme and this weeks event was on dance – learn to programs and performances. And boy did they offer a lot of free dance participation demos for anyone interested in picking up a few steps. So if you were interested in joining you had your choice of a few clogging basics, cool disco dance moves, hip hop routines or learn some fast Broadway numbers, it was a fun way to learn with some the best of instructors that teach these types of dance.

Afterwards, there were some amazing modern dance performances in the downstairs aquarium and then later in the main hallway with the entire cast of performers. I was so loving the moment – the infectious energy and passion of the performers and the unusual and cool setting for the dance. It was a treat to see such an amazing caliber of exceptional talent performing in an environment atypical of their norm and sharing this wonderful dance experience just for the pure love of dance to an appreciative audience.

Thursday nights at the Academy of Sciences are on-going and are from 6 to 10pm with a revolving theme to each Thursday night. A word of advice, do go early because the place gets mobbed later in the evening and it’s nice to be able to see most of the shows and regular exhibits.

Noel, as usual, your photography is gorgeous. I always want to go the places you share partly because of your photos. I admit that I generally stay away form Natural History museums in big cities because of the “children running amok” issue—been there, done that—-but the way you visited sounds like a great idea.

What a terrific way to spend an evening and all for $12! With the variety of things to see and watch and learn there’s bound to be something for everyone. If I lived in the area I’d have my Thursday nights booked!

What a perfect timing Noel, as I too just visited a museum night, but in Berlin. While in San Francisco it seems the night was limited to the one museum, in Berlin you could actually enter as many as 80 with one single ticket. Obviously it was also well frequented, only the hip-hop dace moves were missing… 🙂
We visit San Francisco often to visit our family and this is a place we need to see. How neat to see it with only adults. I can’t help but wonder if any adults acted like kids or was it a completely adult experience.
You can’t help but to act like kids with some of the free dance classes that were being offered – it was so much fun.

This museum looks fabulous! I’m not sure I would take the hip hop and disco classes, but I’m sure those would be fun if I was more coordinated. This place is a must see for me when I finally return to San Francisco.
