This exciting large square and marketplace in the middle of the old Medina in Marrakesh is the meeting spot and social gathering area for locals and tourists visiting Marrakesh. Jemaa El Fna, meaning The mosque with a square at the end of the world or more than likely a courtyard fronting it. The area surrounding the square has the souk or marketplace where you can find all different hand made crafts, clothing and products made in Morocco. Within the square itself are orange juice vendors, snake charmers and other entertainers that vie for tourist dollars all day and into the late evenings..
At night-time, the square comes alive with dozens of food stalls selling a variety of local foods, snacks and fast foods. Most of the food is shown raw so you can pick and choose what you would love to try for the night and it is prepared fresh and served immediately to your table. Performers, story tellers, dancers and musicians flock to area to claim an open spot and attract the local crowds to make their daily rations of tips. This oral and cultural assemblage is now designated as a Unesco World Heritage Masterpiece of Oral and Heritage of Humanity and celebrates the traditions and culture of the Medina and it’s people.

Yes a few, but mostly nibbling small dishes, not full meals
You have captured the Medina square and souk so well – I haven’t been to Marrakesh for such a long time now but the smells, noise and bustle are so memorable looking at the photos! I was nervous when we were there in case of seeing snakes, fortunately we were lucky not to as I hate them!! I’m glad you didn’t have a photo of one above!!
How I’d love to go back to Marrakech some time soon! Really like these shots – the second one in particular. They show how the city is still thriving and active even late at night.

Marrakesh has been on our mental list of places to go for the longest time but the opportunity just hasn’t come up yet, though even if we don’t make it before ours travels finally meet their end, we’ll certainly go during a long holiday in the future.
