Faenza highlights: A visit to a medieval Romagna city at its best
The historic center of Faenza is very easy to navigate with most of the streets leading directly to the medieval center which is mostly composed of pedestrian zones and very easy to walk around. You really get a nice feel of the center with buildings that are two stories or less in height, with the exception of the cathedral which dominates the skyline. This makes it easy to see all the wonderful details of the architecture at eye level.
I must admit that it’s nice being able to walk in the pedestrian zone of the historic district where there is more room to explore without the distractions of cars. This makes it so much easier to maneuver the smaller streets without having to worry about a car right behind you and everything in the center is so walkable and attractive. It almost feels like little has changed outside of the newer shops and amenities available at all the shops in the district. Having a car free zone was a wise decision from the local government and really creates a great environment for the community and tourists to support businesses downtown in a pleasant environment and squares (piazzas) left for the people to enjoy.
Just like some of the other historic and grand cities in the Emilia-Romagna region, Faenza also has some of the most elegant porticoes in the historic area. Large awnings are extended out into the piazza on warm sunny days and outdoor dining spaces pop out all over the piazza. There’s always something more refined with all these ornate buildings with their beautiful porticoes filled with galleries and shops.

What a beautiful city and I love the fact that it is pedestrianised, it makes for so much more an enjoyable experience when walking around. I have some painted plates just like the ones in the shop there since I collected quite a few on my travels.
I’m glad you had a silver lining to getting sick and ending up in Faenza. It looks like a wonderful place to spend some time recuperating. It’s frightening to get ill overseas, especially when you don’t know the cause. Assuming everything worked out ok?
Yes it was very sudden and abrupt, fortunately some R&R did the trick
Every cloud has a silver lining… even being ill! This city is charming – it is like Rome or Venice, but before the tourists. The architecture is fantastic and so good to get photos of something so off the beaten track, but as stunning as if it were! Glad you are feeling better!
