This is a continuation of my exploration of Lake Bled when I visited in the Autumn season which is a perfect time to explore the area and see the fall colors around the lake and surrounding hillsides. Travel to Lake Bled is relatively easy from the capital by bus or train, or you can also opt to doing a guided day tour of the area that includes highlights to each of these attractions. But, I prefer to DIY on my own trips and took a train ride from the capital city and to the main railway station past Lake Bled town so i could get a better tour of the entire lake leading up to Lake Bled.
Exploring Lake Bled in Autumn
Unlike the easy lakeside trail that I posted previously on Lake Bled, the hike up from the trails to the castle was a workout going up a steep incline. The climb up is through some forested areas so you are sheltered from direct sun which for a fall day was incredibly warm.
Unfortunately, this was the only route from the lake trail unless you take a bus or taxi directly to the castle entrance. But once you are at the top, you are rewarded with remarkable views of the entire region. Plus you can easily chalk this up as burning calories in advance for the amazing dessert selections that the area is known for, and of course this will be your just reward for the rigorous climb to the castle.
Voila – the castle!
We finally make it to the fortress walls below and it really looks impressive from the entry and almost impenetrable. Al the walls were covered with this shocking red colored ivy, a beautiful contrast to the creamy walls of the castle interiors. I didn’t expect to see a tudor looking castle, but since there is a lot of Austrian influence, it made sense to the architectural details.
A brief history of Lake Bled Castle
Certainly, Noel, let’s dive into the history of Lake Bled Castle without using the specified words:
**Lake Bled Castle’s Rich Past**
Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the stunning Lake Bled, this castle boasts a history as rich as its surroundings. The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest in Slovenia.
Originally built for defensive purposes, it evolved over time to serve various roles, including a feudal estate. The castle saw its fair share of changes, renovations, and owners. However, its most significant transformation came during the Renaissance when it was adorned with frescoes that still captivate visitors today.
In the 19th century, the castle took on a romantic, medieval aesthetic, influenced by the prevailing architectural trends of the time. It was also during this period that the famous poet, Anton Tomaž Linhart, advocated for the preservation of the castle’s historical and cultural significance.
Lake Bled Castle offers unparalleled views of the lake and the surrounding Julian Alps. It’s a testament to the enduring charm of historical sites that continue to be a source of inspiration for travelers and writers alike. Today, it stands as a testament to Slovenia’s rich heritage and offers an immersive journey through time for anyone who visits.
A room with a view!
Exploring the castle grounds is more leisurely with an audio guide self tour and the views from all the rooms and castle walls are simply stunning. I had a small picnic with my travel companion Kyna on the castle walls and you couldn’t have asked for better weather and magnificent fall views of the entire region.
Fall foliage, trees and more at Lake Bled
When it comes to the local trees and foliage plants around Lake Bled, Slovenia, during the fall, you’re in for a treat. As a photographer and nature enthusiast, you’ll find a variety of species showcasing their autumnal beauty.
European Beech (Fagus sylvatica)
These majestic trees turn a deep, coppery bronze in the fall. Their smooth, silvery bark provides a striking contrast to the fiery foliage.
Oak Trees (Quercus)
Oaks are known for their robust, reddish-brown leaves. They’re scattered around the area and add a touch of rustic charm to the landscape.
Maple Trees (Acer)
While not as common as in some other parts of the world, you can still find maple trees here. Their vibrant red and orange leaves stand out against the greenery.
Silver Birch (Betula pendula)
The silver birch, with its distinctive white bark, offers a soft contrast to the vivid autumn colors. Its leaves turn a bright, sunny yellow.
Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)
The dogwood shrubs are a delightful addition with their deep red foliage, creating beautiful accents in the underbrush.
Wildflowers
In addition to trees, Lake Bled boasts an array of fall-blooming wildflowers, like asters and goldenrods, adding splashes of purple and yellow to the landscape.
Vineyards
Don’t forget the vineyards that dot the region. The grapevines turn vibrant shades of red and orange, creating a stunning patchwork of colors on the hillsides.
Now, your audience can expect to see a captivating array of colors when you describe these local trees and foliage plants in your blogs. The diversity of species and the vividness of their autumn transformations offer a rich palette for your photography and storytelling. Enjoy capturing the beauty of Lake Bled’s fall foliage!

Finally arriving Lake Bled town, you’ll find picturesque streets lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, perfect for savoring local delights and picking up unique souvenirs or trying out some of the local food or desserts the area is known for. Bled’s church on the island in the middle of the lake and Bled Castle perched on a cliff above are quintessential postcard views.
Oh the dessert!
Well here is the dessert you’ve done your work out climbing up to the fortress and now you can sample the regional dessert which is a pudding and whipped cream cake, with a crunchy topping – dig in!

Hi Noel, these are some stunning pictures you have of Lake Bled! I am planning to visit it this autumn and was wondering which exact dates did you visit it? Thanks!
Gosh, let me think – I think it was mid October time frame, really a wonderful time to visit, enjoy
You made lake bled live in your photography Noel. Awesome place with beautiful pics. Loved your posts and clicks. Keep sharing with us ! Thank you
Well that was a superb post. I investigated a lot of your links. Couldn’t resist back and white Marrakech and Venice – both brave choices – that paid off. I enjoyed the Lake Bled and Croatian posts because I will be over there in May/June 2015. The dessert photo and boats at lake edge photo were my favourites in a wonderful array.
Franca, our friend and I split one of those cream cakes when we were there last year as they’re SOOOO rich. You enjoyed it as much as the beautiful colours around the lake?
I actually thought the whipped cream dessert just okay, light and fluffy but not as sweet or flavorful as I imagined.
beautiful lake, stunning and colorful scenery (your photos capture it all) – looks like an amazing place to visit. The castles perched on the rock give the place a fairytale feel.
The fall colours make the pictures absolutely amazing and the pictures where you can see the castle from below are stunning. It looks like it was just thrown on top of the mountain.
Noel, I’m having a difficult time picking out my favorite photo. I love the main entry one, because the light and the red vines are stunning, but I also have a soft spot in my heart for boat docks…hmmm. Those desserts are humongous! Are they as tasty as they look? I have got to get to Lake Bled!
I have fallen in love with Slovenia and Lake Bled from your first set. But now I like it even more. Funny how a place that I never gave a thought to actually made it on my bucket list (but I linked to your first post).
Hi Noel, I so so enjoyed this post. I always want to go to Slovenia. Bled and castle is more glorious that I have imagined. What a wonderful time to be there during fall. It’s looks so so magical. i’ll make sure to visit during fall season myself. Your photos are so stunning and so inspiring. They look almost painterly. I have found myself scrolling up and down so many times.
