There are so many things to do in Puerto Vallarta and everyone loves to visit this popular west coast city in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is for for a quick weekend getaways or even a nice long week stay to relax, explore and do some fun attractions, adventure excursions and of course eat some delicious local foods from the area.You’ll never run out of exciting and cool things to do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

More than just a beach destination, Puerto Vallarta offers some magnificent colonial architecture to explore, lush jungles and nature preserves you can hike through and a smorgasbord of amazing local Mexican cuisine from yummy margaritas, fish taco stands and fresh salsas to international food flavors to experience in the city.

Weather and the best time of the year to visit Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, boasts a pleasant tropical climate that attracts visitors year-round. The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your preferences and activities.

The peak tourist season runs from November to April, offering sunny days, lower humidity, and temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (mid-20s to low 30s Celsius). This period is perfect for beach activities and exploring the city’s culture, but expect higher prices and larger crowds.

The rainy season spans from May to October, with increased rainfall, brief showers, and temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (around 30 degrees Celsius). This time is quieter, with lower hotel rates and lush green landscapes, but plan outdoor activities accordingly and stay updated on weather forecasts.

Puerto Vallarta experiences the hurricane season from June to November, although the chances of encountering a hurricane are typically low. Stay informed and follow local authorities’ instructions during this period.

Flying into Puerto Vallarta and getting around

There are many flights from the United States and Canada going direct to Puerto Vallarta at Gustavo Diaz Ordaz Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVM) with large Carriers like United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Mexican carriers like. My Flight from LAX to Puerto Vallarta was non-stop and a direct 2-hour flight which was fast and super easy. The trip from the airport to downtown is less than four miles to get to your final destination. From the airport,

it is easy to book an Uber or taxi directly from the airport area or if you are very budget concious then catch the local bus to the old town for less than 10 pesos or $.50 cents. Taxis or Uber are faster but you do pay a little bit extra for the convenience of getting to your destination quickly

Getting around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is relatively compact with most of the main neighborhoods and tourist attractions within walking distance. Getting around Puerto Vallarta is relatively easy, thanks to a variety of transportation options available.

Public Transportation: Puerto Vallarta has an efficient and affordable public transportation system. Buses, known as “camiones,” run throughout the city and along the main routes. They are a popular mode of transportation for both locals and tourists. The buses are easily recognizable with their distinct blue and white colors and can take you to popular destinations within the city and nearby areas.

Taxis: Taxis are plentiful in Puerto Vallarta and can be hailed from the street or found at designated taxi stands. It’s recommended to use authorized taxis with official signage. Make sure to negotiate the fare or ask the driver to use the meter before starting your journey.

Uber: Uber is available in Puerto Vallarta, providing an additional convenient and reliable option for transportation. Using the Uber app, you can request a ride and easily navigate through the city.

Rental Cars: If you prefer the freedom and flexibility of driving, rental cars are available from various agencies in Puerto Vallarta. However, keep in mind that traffic in the city center can be congested, and parking may be limited in popular areas.

Walking: Puerto Vallarta’s downtown area, known as the “Malecon,” is pedestrian-friendly and perfect for exploring on foot. Many of the main attractions, shops, restaurants, and the beach are within walking distance, allowing you to immerse yourself in the city’s charm and beauty.

Getting to downtown Puerto Vallarta or Centro

Downtown Puerto Vallarta is broken down into 7 main districts with 5 being the most popular in the tourist zone to include old downtown, Hotel Zone, Zona Romantica, Marina Vallarta and South Vallarta. When you want to be in the hub of things consider staying around the downtown district, Romantica or the Hotel Zone where you’ll find a wide array of accommodations, activities and attractions and so many places to eat in the city.

1. Explore the Malecon

Covering an area of about one mile in length, one of the first things to do in Puerto Vallarta is to explore this spectacular board walk called the Malecon fronting Banderas beach and bay on one side and on the other lined with art galleries, restaurants and boutique stores. A good first orientation to visiting Puerto Vallarta puts you in right on the Malecon with this colorful walk with street performances, street vendors and food stalls and fun places to see sculpture and local art right on the promenade.

One of the best entertainment experiences is called Dancers Flyers or Danza de los Voladores which re-enacts an ancient MesoAmerican ritual that has four men tied to ropes and climb up to the top of the pole and spin slowly to the ground with someone playing a flute at the top of the pole.

Tip – Check out the modern and cool Puerto Vallarta pier to get onto the bay without getting your feet wet and fantastic views of the bay and the city skyline behind you.

2. Food Tour in Puerto Vallarta

If you are not familiar or researched places to eat in Puerto Vallarta then book a food tour so that you an experience a combination of popular and local food haunts that will give you a flavor of foodie places to experience. 3. Explore the Old Town or Centro

After exploring the Malecon, the next best thing to do is visit the Old Town or Centro. The Old town district of Puerto Vallarta is historic and colorful with a jumble of streets, colonial architecture and unique. The iconic church that pops up in most Puerto Vallarta pictures is Our Lady of Guadalupe and definitely one of the main attractions to visit when you are out exploring the Centro. It is fun to check the lookout points above Puerto Vallarta and then walk down the historic district and cobbled streets.

4. Our Lady of Guadalupe

Standing tall in the center of the old town is Our Lady of Guadalupe church which is an iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta. It is located right off the Malecon and visiting the ornate interiors of the church is a must and you can come and visit when they have a festival that celebrates the Lady of Guadalupe festival. In between their church schedule, you can tour the interiors and also climb the bell towers for a fantastic view of the city center (donation to the church requested)

5. Hang out at Playa Los Muertos

The first thing to do in Puerto Vallarta always happens to enjoy some beach time. The main and expansive beach fronting Puerto Vallarta is called Playa Los Muertos is an easy and fun beach time if you have a few hours or all day to enjoy on the beach. Easy access to many food venues and food stalls or even fantastic massage venues all in the Romanitica zona area. You can also have a fun beach time on the beach or head to the main pier for wonderful water views or catch a boat tour to the surrounding beaches and islands for a fun water tour of the area.

6. Plaza de Armas

Located right on the Malecon, the main square at Plaza de Armas is lively all day long with live music, mariachi’s bands, street vendors and just enjoying the crowds and activities around the plaza. The tourism office is also located here at the plaza so you can drop by for some maps, pick up a brochure or have some questions to ask any of the attendants at the office.

7. Playa Conchas Chinas

Located on the southern end past the Malecon, Playa Conchas Chinas is more low key and a perfect spot to enjoy a day on the beach or a sunset spot with a delicious margarita and some local bites from a beachside restaurant. To get to these secluded beach areas, you can catch a local bus, taxi or Uber to get to the streets above and climb down to the lovely areas that are typically quiet and less crowded then the main beach areas around Puerto Vallarta. If you are looking for a different beach vibe without the crowds and gorgeous beach views all the way down the coastline to Puerto Vallarta, then head out to Playa Conchas Chinas for a fun and relaxing beach time.

8. Climb Mirador Farro Calle Matamoros

If you are looking for an adventure and view, then consider the hike or climb up to the Mirador Farro Calle Matamoros which is a series of staircases that lead up to a fantastic observation lookout point over all of Puerto Vallarta. This is a strenuous climb so make sure that you bring sun protection, water and pure gusto for you to climb all the steps up to the observation areas. When you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Puerto Vallarta and the coastline to enjoy. To get to Mirador de la Cruz take Abasolo street and walk all the way to the base of the stairs to start your hike.

Tip – if you visit here for sunset, you’ll really enjoy the spectacular coastline and ocean views with a sunset to boot, so try to get here for the sunset experience. And make sure you have your camera ready and all charged for those spectacular views on top. There is also a shorter viewpoint area with a fun black and white tower that looks like a lighthouse and easier to do than the Mirador de la Cruz in the old town.

10. Enjoy all the amazing street art, sculpture and art galleries

Puerto Vallarta is filled with creatives and has so much amazing sculpture and art displays (Mostly around the Malecon area), amazing street murals and fantastic art galleries. For more murals and street vibe you can explore the small backstreets in the old town Centro and the Romantico zone to enjoy some colorful displays of street art.

Around the Zona Romantica district are quite a few art galleries that you can explore and scattered all around the neighborhood. Featuring the works of local artists and other international collections, you’ll enjoy the varied and colorful artwork visits here in Puerto Vallarta

Tip – if you are into sand sculptures, keep your eyes open to the fabulous sand sculptures on the beach at the Malecon boardwalk area.

11. Sunsets in Puerto Vallarta

When you are enjoying the days with full itineraries visiting around the city, make sure you have some easy quiet time to enjoy the sunset views from the top of Mirador de la Cruz, walking around the Malecon or just any of the fabulous beaches around Puerto Vallarta. It really is magical and the sunsets here are special even if you’re travelling solo.

12. Craft Beer Scene

Outside of delicious Mezcal and Tequila or margaritas, the craft beer scene here in Puerto Vallarta is hot and fun to explore with two craft breweries around the city to enjoy. The newest is called Monzon which uses local ingredients and has suggested food pairings to make this a fun and delicious experience. The older craft brewery is called Los Muertos Brewing with fantastic brews ranging in flavor profiles and strength of beer. They also have fantastic food menu and amazing lunch specials to check out.

A new local craft beer maker has also entered the brew market here in Puerto Vallarta with Enteripilbri Brewing at their own shop and do some tastings.

13. Shop some of the local markets in Puerto Vallarta

If you love to visit local markets then you’ll enjoy some of the best markets in town to explore and taste some good foods. There are lots of municipal markets around the city to explore and try some of the best produce and street food around. One of the most popular outdoor market venues is called Olas Atlas markets that happens every Saturday from 9 to 2pm. Other smaller markets to explore include visiting the 5 de Diciembre and Emiliano Zapata neighborhoods in the city. 14. Do the Turtle Release Program

Located around Nuevo Vallarta, you can do the Turtle Release program which has been going on for over 30 years as a way to protect and save the sea turtles in the area. Through a variety of hotels that participate in the program or the Organization directly on their Facebook page here, the turtle program happens from July to December and is mostly volunteers and appreciates interest and donations to their cause.

15. A unique arts and crafts experience at Rio Cuale

The Rio Cuale is a river that runs from the top of the mountains and down into Puerto Vallarta and into the ocean. There’s a cool man-made island that you can access through bridges to the island and it is filled with fun and colorful shops, art venues and eating spots to enjoy a visit. A fun way to get to the island is on the swinging bridge on Calle Constitucion on the Zona Romantica side. You’ll find everything from cheap tourist type souvenirs to more authentic art and artisanal crafts and products to bargain on.

16. Rhythms of the Night Experience

One of the most unique and best food and entertainment experiences to do in Puerto Vallarta is this fantastic show and dining experience that combines a Cirque du Soleil type of vibe on a secluded beach you cruise to called Las Caletas. It is spectacular and definitely worth the splurge to experience the dinner, show and even the open bar cruise experience to get to the destination.

17. Do a free walking tour of downtown Puerto Vallarta

You can do a free walking tour sponsored by the local tourism office located at City Hall in Centro at the Malecon. This local tour covers all the main sites in the downtown historic district with walks to cool vantage points, shop visits including only local food venues Made in Puerto Vallarta and walking around the malecon and Plaza Armas areas.  The morning tour offered is slightly different than the morning tour so if you are a late person, the afternoon tour is probably a safer bet for you to do.

18. Enjoy the Vallarta Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens at Puerto Vallarta is quite spectacular and worth the effort to experience. Located outside of the city and accessible by bus or an Uber ride you can visit the many gardens and even have a fantastic meal with views on the site. You’ll enjoy visiting and photographing all these gorgeous garden rooms and exploring all the cool spots and IG photo ops here and even enjoy a nice lunch during your visit.

19. Take a boat and snorkel ride to Isla Marietas and other fun boating experiences

Joining a boat tour will offer you some fantastic ocean and skyline views of Puerto Vallarta and the fantastic coastline. The boat ride to Isla Marietas is fantastic to this protected natural park with fantastic marine life, tropical fish and the iconic Love Beach. 20. Whale Watching and dolphin cruise in Puerto Vallarta

If you are visiting Puerto Vallarta during December to April time frame, that is the whale watching season in the area. Doing a whale watching experience here will definitely bring you closer to observing this amazing animal up close to really have a fantastic experience with an experience outfitter.

21. Watch the MesoAmerican pole dancers in a traditional swing

This is an unusual show to watch on the Malecon especially at sunset when the dancers along with a flute player in the background fall and swing from large ropes a top of a giant pole and swing fast to the ground.

22. Gay Puerto Vallarta

The very gay friendly Gay friendly Puerto Vallarta scene comes alive in the colorful district of Zona Romanitica with fun shops and galleries, delicious restaurants and bars, cheap massage studios, theaters and a fun place to walk around and absorb the lively vibe and scene.  Night time is when the area is abuzz with people and festivities and Zona Romantic really comes alive so come out and explore this gay friendly district in the heart of PV.

23. Fantastic and cheap massages

After exploring the entire city with tired feet and muscles, the place to go for a fantastic and cheap massage is also the Zona Romantica district with so many fantastic massage parlors that cater to all different body massage needs. You can have a basic down and dirty massage for cheap or more elevated options with facial treatments and other current techniques to sooth those aching muscles and bring you back into a state of bliss. The entire area is filled with massage studios and you’ll see friendly staff asking you on the streets for a fantastic massage experience.

Those double decker Hop on Hop Off busses will show you the best of Puerto Vallarta’s main attractions without having to taxi or walk all over the city. You’ll find this inexpensive option a fantastic way to see and learn about the city and enjoy the spectacular views without the hassle of doing it on your own. 25. Check out all the cool art mosaic benches in the Romantica zone

The main square in the Romantica zone called El Parque de los Arzulejos is filled with these gorgeous mosaic tiles on the benches and bandstand made with love from local artists and friends of the park to make this a special space. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy some quiet time of just people watching in the park and some shade from the intense heat. Make sure to visit when you are in the area for some colorful art and photo inspiration in the area.

Artist/workers and volunteers here accept tips to just buy materials to continue these lovely projects so do consider supporting them with your extra pesos.

26 Thursday night market at the Marina

The Marina district is lively and fun to explore late afternoon to night at the Thursday Night Market. The harbor and waterfront areas are lined with various local artists, handmade crafters and local food vendors offering a variety of delicious foods, souvenirs and other take aways from this popular market. All the waterfront restaurants are also open with lively performances and entertainment that truly adds to the festive nature of this market. You can easily catch an Uber or Taxi to the market and for budget conscious, take the local bus for only 10 pesos to get you directly to the waterfront areas of the Marina.

Climbing the Mirador de la Cruz in Puerto Vallarta is a must-do activity. This viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and Bay of Banderas.
