For those viewers that are totally into the Game of Thrones and the amazing historical places filmed around the world to represent the stunning and exotic lands, the next season 5 series will feature the amazing Alcazar in Seville, Spain. Set to represent the famous water gardens of Dorne, the royal residences and gardens of the Alcazar in Seville are world renown on their own, but this may also bring a new audience base of admirers that typically don’t get a chance to see these amazing historic sites in person. Check out the details of Game of Thrones set for Alcazar in Seville, Spain
Game of Thrones at the Alcazar of Seville
The Alcazar of Seville was built in 712 as a fortress and then converted into royal residences. The palace was certified as a Unesco World Heritage site in 1987. One of the most beautiful palaces in Spain and created in the popular Mudejar architecture of the Moorish kings of that timeframe. This royal palace is noted to being the oldest palace still in use in Europe with the upper chambers of the palace used when the royal family comes to Seville for official visits.
The exotic gardens outdoors at the Alcazar in Seville
Prior to the Alcazar in Seville being chosen, two other palaces were being scouted including the Alhambra of Granada is set high on a plateau over looking Granada with imposing views of the city. And last the Alhambra of Cordoba which is smaller but still grand with its Arabic influences and Mudejar artwork. In the end, the Alcazar in Seville was chosen. The Alcazar has also been used to film historic movies including ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. The Seville Game of Thrones staging at the Alcazar in Seville was a truly spectacular attempt to use this World Heritage site and showcase the splendors of this magnificent palace and complex.
Islamic architecture and interiors of the Alcazar
One of the most amazing Game of Thrones places to be featured is the Seville palace in the fashionable architecture of that time frame with Islamic/Moorish influences. All these gorgeous Islamic details were were an important and historic part of Seville’s history and culture and saved with Catholic embellishments throughout the palace. Detailed interior rooms with geometric patterns and repetitive motifs covered all the interior walls and created richly decorated rooms with a defined eastern influence.
Alcazar Seville Game of Thrones
The beautiful palace and real Alcazar in Seville was well placed in showing off the spectacular gardens and interiors for the Game of Thrones series. In fact there has been extensive features of Spain in the series to include the areas of the Costa Brava and Girona in particular.

Thanks Noel really it’s wonderful 🙂
Really inspiring.
I loved seeing these photos Noel. It was extremely hot when we were in Seville – well over 40 degrees late at night in mid-April. We visited the gorgeous Alcazar. We don’t often revisit places, but I do want to revisit Seville when the weather is cooler so I can truly appreciate walking around this lovely city. I’m not into Game of Thrones but Marty is.
What amazing photos of the Alcazar, especially those astonishingly beautiful arches! As someone who lives in, and writes about Seville, I was thrilled when they filmed Game of Thrones here. In fact, a few weeks ago they filmed some scenes from Season Six in the Alcazar. In my blog I did a post on exactly which scenes of Season Five were filmed in which parts of the palace. By the way, the location in Córdoba which they were considering is also an Alcazar – palace-fortress.
Just watched the last episode of Season 5. Really stoked to see beautiful Andalucia featured throughout it!
Spain rocks
Do you mind if I quote a few of your posts as long as I provide credit

Yes, please do if you do give credit, but not the entire post, you need to put a paragraph and then link to my site for the entire contents (that is typical way of sharing), thanks
I love the Alcazar — maybe I should watch the show!
I had no idea that other Alhambra-like places existed. Thanks for introducing me to the Alcazar in Seville. Beautiful photos of the archways.
The gardens are fabulous even in the rain, Noel. 🙂 I may have to watch this series.
Great photos
What a beautiful place – perfect!
We’ve yet to watch GoT, Noel. Hey, we’re still working our way through Breaking Bad. However, having been to the Alcazar, we know that it’s the ideal setting for such a lavish production.
You got some great shots here, and I really love the architecture!
Ooo! As a GoT geek, this news and these photos are very exciting!
Amazing captures, Noel! The architectural details in these buildings are just incredible. Moorish architecture has to be the most stunning you can find in continental Europe! We drove through Andalucia on our way to Morocco and really regret not spending time over there, especially after seeing the southern Spain episode of Parts Unknown a few weeks before we left. Seems like it would be a sweet place to chill out for a while (months and years, if possible).
The most amasing palace/fortress I have ever been to!
The most amazing fortress/palace I have ever been to!
I have to confess that I tried to watch GoT and I didn’t love it. Your pics are making me reconsider though. I might just watch a bit of Season 5 to see the Alcazar.
I love Game of Thrones and this looks a fantastic setting. My other half worked on the first series in Belfast (costume armour) and we’ve both been addicted every since!
If I were to die in the Game of Thrones universe, I’d love to have it happen here … you could hardly do worse..!
I totally dislike the show and the books … but the scenery might make it worth another peek 🙂
Wow! Thanks for letting us know. We’ve just visited Croatia and some of the places where Game of Thrones was filmed there too. Just awesome. Shall watch Season 5 with great interest now that you’ve alerted us! Tip: if you tag Instagram pics with #gameofthrones you might (as I did) attract new followers 😉
These are beautiful Noel! Inside is absolutely insane with all that detail! I’m just finishing book 5 of GOT now but have yet to catch up on the show…excited to see your photos come to life in upcoming seasons!
Awesome photos! What beautiful architecture!
I love Seville but have only been there once. These pics really make me want to return!
Breathtaking! I cannot wait to experience this with my own eyes. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous photos.
Ooh! I can’t wait for the next season- looks like it is going to be gorgeous! Great pics.
Whoa 🙂 Feeling lucky ’cause I’ve been there last week! The gardens are huge and gorgeous – perfect shooting location for Dorn!
When were you in Seville?! How did I miss you?
That’s right I forgot you were located in Seville, another time perhaps?
Wow, such a pretty place. I wanted to go to Seville but ended up staying in Granada because it was so hot when I was in Spain. On my list for my next trip to Spain. 🙂
The Alcazar is stunning and really does fit the location of their set for season 5 of the Game of Thrones
